Working in Partnership with Cannington C of E Primary School

We were delighted to hear the the school is going to take on the planting and maintenance of the school path border this year. The school will be running a gardening club and it is fantastic to hear that so many of their students want to get involved. They will receive support from the team at Bridgwater College’s Walled Gardens of Cannington, as well as the expertise of the other bastion of horticulture in Cannington, Brymore Academy. The community working together to improve the wellbeing of its inhabitants and the wildlife.

To support getting this project up and running, we are meeting up at the school path border to complete some more tidying and clearance as part of our Sustainable Saturdays group. As ever, please feel free to join us. See you there at 10am this Saturday 16th April ….

We very much look forward to seeing how things develop over the coming months….

You may have spotted some bloomers out and about last night too as Weedy Wednesdays began. This regular meet up will continue right through until the autumn. We were out watering the various planters and barrier baskets around the village and having a bit of tidy up and weed of the border on the corner of Clifford Park. It’s all go!!

So, please consider joining us as we prepare to take part in the South West in Bloom ‘Champion of  Champions’ category in 2016…

There are many ways you can get involved, it is not just for the green fingered, although those looking to further their skills in this arena should come along….

Get your Marigolds Out!

On this occasion we are talking about the glove variety rather than the botanical!

We announced before Christmas that we had kindly been given the use of a polytunnel and that it needed some TLC.

Blooming hard work…

Are you about to tidy your shed?

We are grateful for donations of tables from the Parish Council and from a fellow bloomer, Elaine. We have purchased weed suppressant matting and tape to fix the holes. Now all that we need is elbow grease!

We are meeting on Saturday 6th February at 10am at the field on Gurney StreetYou will find a hole in the hedge next to the Old Popham’s farm house and the polytunnel is right there. It would be useful to bring buckets and soft brushes as well as your marigolds…

Many of the regular bloomers will be there and it is our hope that more people will join us. It is a chance to socialise, have fun and contribute positively to the local community. It is also a chance to quiz the group about what we get up to and why! All are welcome……

If there is enough of us we will split off and do some gardening too.

Many of you will be aware that during the lighter evenings we meet for ‘Weedy Wednesdays’. We are keen that as many Cannington people as possible have the chance to get involved so we will also be meeting every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month too.

This starts with ‘Marigold Saturday’. Hope to see you there….

Bloomers hard at work…

Some of the crew were out and about over the weekend doing what is at the heart of the campaign – gardening.

Ray, Kym and Sarah worked hard on the school path, clearing and planting daffodils and wall flowers donated by On the Level Building Services.

Meanwhile Jane tackled the border next to the Village Hall, again weeding, tidying and sweeping, as well as adding daffodils and polyanthus donated by The Walled Gardens Of Cannington.

In need of some TLC...

Before….

Ta da....

After…

Well done team!

Flowers in Outer Space

Britain is often described as a nation of gardeners and the ‘In Bloom’ campaign seeks to galvanise and organise this tendency. So it seems fitting that a Brit has been the first person to nurture  a plant into bloom in outer space.

The Daily Telegraph explains in Micro-gravity gardening: first flower blooms in space

Bulb Planting in the churchyard

We have expanded our spring bulb planting this year to include the churchyard of St Mary’s.

With the help and support of Father Peter and the congregation, we planted a swathe of daffodils along the hedge of the Garden of rest.

Come back in the spring for photos.
