Working in Partnership with Cannington C of E Primary School

We were delighted to hear the the school is going to take on the planting and maintenance of the school path border this year. The school will be running a gardening club and it is fantastic to hear that so many of their students want to get involved. They will receive support from the team at Bridgwater College’s Walled Gardens of Cannington, as well as the expertise of the other bastion of horticulture in Cannington, Brymore Academy. The community working together to improve the wellbeing of its inhabitants and the wildlife.

To support getting this project up and running, we are meeting up at the school path border to complete some more tidying and clearance as part of our Sustainable Saturdays group. As ever, please feel free to join us. See you there at 10am this Saturday 16th April ….

We very much look forward to seeing how things develop over the coming months….

You may have spotted some bloomers out and about last night too as Weedy Wednesdays began. This regular meet up will continue right through until the autumn. We were out watering the various planters and barrier baskets around the village and having a bit of tidy up and weed of the border on the corner of Clifford Park. It’s all go!!

Oh happy day!

Many thanks to Cannington Flower Show for their wonderful donation of £250, so much can be done with this.  We’re already writing the shopping list.  Now let me see, we need compost, more compost, oh and even more compost!!

Epic day!

As promised, the sun shone brightly across Cannington today, filling us with enthusiasm and determination to seize the moment…

We are pleased as punch to let you all know that we achieved this:

Ta da!

Ten bloomers pitched up today. There was even a return of our old mucker, Kris Scotting, as ever sharing his pearls of wisdom and holding stuff!

Thanks Kris!

Everybody pulled together and worked as a team…

It’s lucky we get on so well, space was tight at times!

As ever, power tools were used to the max and a little envy rippled around some members of the group as Ray brought out the biggest nail gun anybody had ever seen! Ray is a generous guy so he let others have a go:

This photo unfortunately doesn’t show the queue of people wanting this job!

It was a great day, that got sunnier as it went on. Everybody had something to contribute and played a role:

There was also tidying of the bed in front of the allotment and more tidying of the school path in preparation for the work of the children at Cannington Church of England Primary School.

A lot was achieved, laughter and banter flowed, we all went home feeling good. Mission accomplished, well done all!

Stock up on vitamin D

The weather is forecast to be mild and warm again on Saturday. So if you’re at a loose end, join the bloomers and catch some rays.

Exposure to sunlight has been shown to lower blood pressure, enhance mood and promote a better night’s sleep.

If there are enough of us we will be replacing the polythene on the poly tunnel. Plan B is to carry out some weeding and tidying, the border at the front of the allotments is on the hit list.

As ever, we will meet in the garden of Cannington House at the bottom of Rodway at 10am…

A Good Little Work Out!

One of the many benefits of being a bloomer is being able to ditch the gym and get an endorphin release in the fresh air.

Mission accomplished!

A team of seven gathered to finish digging the trench around the polytunnel so that we can put new polythene onto the metal framework. The Tomaneys were the first to arrive and one by one the rest of the crew arrived, much to Jane and Dave’s relief!

Everyone got stuck in and the one foot deep trench was dug in no time. Thanks to Dave & Steve for removing a holly tree stump, slap bang where our trench needed to be. Our base camp and growing space is nearly complete!

We have one job left to do, so if you are available on Saturday 2nd April, please join us to help stretch the new cover and secure it. Many hands make light work! There is a handy ‘how to’ video below if you want to gen up first!

Who’s coming  out to play on Saturday?

It is the third Saturday of the month and we will be meeting up again.

The meeting place is the front garden of Cannington House at 10am.

We will continue with our preparations for a new poly tunnel skin, continuing to dig trenches. Skip the gym and join us instead! We will also be tidying the bed at the front of the allotment.
All are welcome to join us….
